Brief Resume on Prof. Muheez Alani DUROSINMI Vice-Chancellor EKO University of Medicine and Health Sciences Otto-Ijanikin, Lagos State
Dr. M. A. Durosinmi graduated from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria in 1978 with MB, BS degrees. After his 12-month National Service at the 20 Infantry Battalion, Warri in the then Bendel State from 1979 to 1980, Dr. Durosinmi returned to the University College Hospital (UCH) for his Postgraduate Fellowship training at the Department of Haematology of the Hospital between 1981 and 1985, leading to the award of the Fellowship Certificate of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria in Pathology (Haematology speciality), FMCPath in 1985. In June 1986, Dr. Durosinmi joined the services of the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) as a Lecturer, and he was also appointed a Consultant Haematologist to the Teaching Hospital, the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife the same year. Dr. Durosinmi rose to the rank of Professor of Haematology in 1995. Between 1994 and 1995, Dr. Durosinmi was at the Academic Haematology and Cytogenetics Department of the Royal Marsden Hospital, London for a 12-month training in Haemato-oncology under the Commonwealth Medical Fellowship. Dr. Durosinmi was with Prof. Joseph Connors for his 3-month International Union against Cancer (UICC), ICRET Fellowship at the Lymphoma Unit, BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver, Canada between October 2000 and January 2001
Dr. Durosinmi was the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences between 2001 and 2005; Head of Haematology at both the University and the Teaching Hospital between 1990 and 1994. He was the foundation Chairman of the Hospital Laboratory Revolving Fund Committee between 1987 and 1994. Dr. Durosinmi was the University Senate Representative in the University Council for the periods 1997 to 1999; 2001 to 2003 and 2003 to 2005. He was the Chairman, University Examination Malpractices Committee 1 from 2010 to 2012 and Chairman, Hospital Anti-corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) from 2008 to 2016. Dr. Durosinmi was the foundation Chair of the University Quality Assurance Committee between 2012 and 2016.
He was the Chief Examiner in Laboratory Medicine, West Afr. Postgraduate Medical College between 1998 and 2002 and Chairman, Faculty of Laboratory Medicine, West Afr. Postgraduate Medical College, Nigeria from 2003 to 2007. He is a member of the Consultative Committee on National Cancer Control. He was the President of the Nigerian Society for Haematology and Blood Transfusion from 2007 to 2009 and the Chairman and Chief Examiner, Faculty of Pathology, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Ijanikin from 2009 to 2013. He was also a member of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) between Nov 2013 and April 2014. Dr. Durosinmi is a Fellow of the following International organisations, the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) Brussels, Belgium since 2002; International Union against Cancer (UICC), Geneva, Switzerland since 2001 and Commonwealth Medical Fellow since 1995. He has been a Member of the International chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) Foundation (iCMLf) Board of National Representatives since 2011.
Dr. Durosinmi has been the National Coordinator of the Novartis’ innovative Glivec International Patient Assistance Programme (GIPAP) in Nigeria since 2003. His dedication to cancer control in Nigeria was recognized in November 2015, when he was honoured with the maiden Christopher Kwesi Oladipupo Williams’ Award for Innovation in Cancer Care in Africa by the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) at its 10th International Conference on Cancer in Africa in Marrakech, Morocco. He is Dr. Durosinmi has published widely in Local and International peer-review journals.
Dr. M A. Durosinmi was confirmed as the Foundation Vice-Chancellor by the Governing COUNCIL of the EKO University of Medicine and Health Sciences on Tuesday 9th January, 2018.
The Vice-Chancellor, Muheez Alani DUROSINMI was born in Abeokuta on the 2nd of April 1952. He started his formal educational career at the then Talim-Ul-Islamiya Ahmadiyya Primary School, Elegbata, Lagos Island and soon moved to the Ansar-UD-Deen College, Isolo, Mushin for his secondary school education between 1967 and 1970. Muheez underwent his Advanced Levels Basic Sciences at the Federal School of Science, Onikan, Lagos and later got admission to read Medicine at the University of Ibadan from 1973 to 1978.
Prof. Durosinmi was the Chairman of the Obafemi Awolowo University Muslim Community between 2004 and 2011 and a member of the Central Working Committee of the Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria (MUSWEN).
