On November 19th, 2024, Eko University of Medicine and Health Sciences (EkoUNIMED) proudly hosted its 4th Clinical Coat Ceremony at the LKJ Event Center, Igando, Lagos. Themed IGBEGA (which signifies “Progress” in Yoruba), the ceremony was a memorable occasion, marking a significant step forward in the journey of the new 400-level medical students as they transition from classroom learning to hands-on clinical training.

The ceremony began with the introduction of the University’s Principal Officers and distinguished guests. These included leaders from affiliated General Hospitals, whose presence underscored the strong partnership between EkoUNIMED and top health institutions in Lagos:

Inspiring Addresses and Guidance
Chief Dr. Hammed Ayodele Ibraheem, the founder and promoter of EkoUNIMED, alongside the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.B. Ejiwunmi, delivered inspiring speeches that highlighted the vision, dedication, and future goals of the institution. Their words resonated with the core theme of IGBEGA, emphasizing the progress and growth of the students as they embrace this new phase in their medical careers.
Deans of various faculties, including Dr. C.A. Diya (Dean, Students’ Affairs), Prof. M.O. Ajala (Dean, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences), and Prof. S.O. Giwa (Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences), as well as Heads of Departments, provided essential orientation to the students. A parent ‘Doctor’ also shared personal experiences, giving unique insights into the challenges and rewards of a medical profession.
A Ceremony to Remember
The highlight of the event was the Clinical Coat Decoration. The new 400-level students were ceremoniously adorned with their clinical coats, symbolizing their readiness to enter the clinical world. This was followed by a session focused on student mentorship, reinforcing the commitment to developing competent and compassionate healthcare professionals.

The day concluded with a delightful cocktail session, offering students, lecturers, parents, and medical professionals a chance to relax, network, and build connections in a less formal setting. It was a perfect blend of celebration and social interaction, encapsulating the spirit of EkoUNIMED as a community that values both Academic Excellence and camaraderie.
